Halfway through 2022: A Mid-Year IoT Checkup

Image
An overview of IoT at the year’s halfway point, plus a spotlight on verticals—energy, automotive, buildings, and retail—shows both challenges and opportunities. Just as industries were coming out of the COVID-19 haze, boom—more trouble. 2022 has brought global unrest, war in Eastern Europe, economic uncertainty , supply chain unpredictability, soaring energy prices , inflation, a massive chip shortage, and, sadly, the list doesn’t end there. The continuing fallout from COVID-related shifts in industries and the global economy weren’t over before a new, intense wave of challenges hit hard. How have the events and realities of the first half of 2022 affected the IoT (Internet of Things) implementations and the IoT space as a whole? How are companies and industries leaning on IoT to power through challenging times? And how are the hurdles and opportunities presented in the first half of 2022 shaping the near-term future in verticals like energy, automotive, buildings, and retail? Accord

Digital Utility for Utility Construction

Image
Every infrastructure segment operates somewhat differently. Different requirements, regulations, oversight, and data flows are common among utilities and other infrastructure projects. Specific requirements can be addressed best by specific applications design and tested for that segment. For example, Locusview provides a seamless digital workflow for long-cycle construction jobs from design to construction to closeout in the energy utility segment. Locusview is a company known for DCM (digital construction management), specifically for energy infrastructure organizations. After more than two and a half years of product development, large-scale pilots, and collaboration with several large utility organizations, they have released a solution for electric utilities featuring a seamless digital construction workflow. Locusview can now help electric utilities expedite the collection and movement of high-quality data from start to finish of planned long-cycle construction projects, en

How Tall Wood You Go?

Image
Natural wood comes from trees, of course. The world’s largest tree, a coastal redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) in the heart of Redwood National Park in California, is 380 feet tall. The Hyperion, as it is known, ranks as the tallest tree in the world and is also taller than the tallest man-made wooden building. So far. Wooden buildings are hardly new. Europe’s Neolithic long house, a narrow timber dwelling built in 6000 BCE, is one of the largest buildings constructed during that period, with a capacity of housing around 30 people. Unfortunately, it is known only from remains while the Horyu-ji temple in Ikaruga, Japan, which includes a five-story building, was constructed recently–607 CE—and is still standing. Over the centuries, wood construction benefited from advances in tools—from stone to steel—and from methods of treating the timber for strength and endurance. Engineering the wood material used in construction also improved its application range. The CLT (cross-laminated timber)

Masonry Repair Materials

Cracks and fissures are a fact of life(cycle) for concrete and masonry. New chemistry can mitigate the long-range effects of weather on new pours, but existing walls, floors, walks, and aprons are still susceptible to the age-old problems. Contractors who find they are called to repair these faults can now turn to specific materials to help.   Master Builders Solutions , a brand of MBCC Group , has been providing advanced chemical results for construction, maintenance, repair, and renovation of structures for generations and is offering new MasterEmaco adhesives designed to provide long-lasting performance in all these applications. They are designed for both ease of use and fast curing to reduce installation time, strong adhesion for long-lasting performance and aesthetics, and durability for the most demanding requirements. Asphalt and GHG

The construction of asphalt pavement has a significant impact on the environment, in both energy use and emissions. When talking GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions from asphalt pavement construction have been receiving increasing attention in recent years. The results of research show that the greenhouse gas emissions from the mixture mixing phase are the highest, and account for about 54% of the total amount. Companies in the field are testing and developing various methodologies to reduce those GHG factors found in asphalt. Ingevity Corp. received an EPD (environmental product declaration) for its Evotherm M1 WMA (Warm Mix Asphalt ) technology showing them to be the first chemical additive supplier to be included in the NAPA (National Asphalt Pavement Assn.’s Emerald Eco-Label , a tool that provides supply-chain specific upstream environmental data for asphalt mixtures. ESG: Not a Linear Journey

If we want to be more sustainable and achieve our ESG (environmental, social, and governance) goals, we need data, which of course is easier said than done. Many companies have a data challenge, meaning they are trying to pull insights from legacy systems and legacy business processes that haven’t been modernized. Perhaps this is our next step to addressing ESG in our organizations. This is exactly the conversation I recently had with Matthew Sekol, industry advocate, worldwide sustainability, Microsoft . We talked all about data on The Peggy Smedley Show this past week. He explains how Microsoft intersects with ESG in a number of ways—and he breaks it down into three different categories. Cloud solutions are designed with sustainability in mind. Product and universal challenges (examples include measuring carbon reduction or how collaboration tools can be used to foster a great employee culture). How Microsoft works with partners and internal services organizations to build solu

Manufacturing Tops Ransomware Target List

It’s a list no industry wants to be at the top of—the most-targeted by ransomware list. Unfortunately for manufacturing companies, the manufacturing sector has landed in the top spot for the second year in a row, according to a new report from Zscaler . Other industries like healthcare and food services have experienced a sharp spike in attacks, and the number of ransomware attacks in general has increased too. What can companies do to keep their systems, devices, and data as safe as possible amid these unfavorable trends? Just how unfavorable are the ransomware trends so far in 2022? Zscaler’s 2022 Ransomware Report has revealed an 80% increase in ransomware attacks between February 2021 and March 2022 compared to the previous year, and the company says this sets new records in terms of volume of attacks and the cost of damages. Ransoms also appear to be going up. The 2022 Unit 42 Ransomware Threat Report from Palo Alto Networks showed a 144% increase in the average ransom demand

Funding the Future

The MC of the Kit Kat Klub in “Cabaret” famously sang, “Money makes the world go around, money, money, money….” Set in 1929, the musical’s lyrics are just as pointed today. Money is the source of resources for people and businesses alike and funding the future developments of tech firms especially depend on getting investments. These days, there are a variety of ways to find that funding. Following the more traditional route, Dusty Robotics , a robotic solution provider for the construction industry, closed a $45 million Series B round of investment led by Scale Venture Partners and joined by returning investors Baseline Ventures, Canaan Partners, Root Ventures, NextGen Venture Partners, and Cantos. The company will use these funds to grow its team, expand its product offerings, and accelerate manufacturing with the goal of deploying Dusty products on all construction sites in the U.S. Dusty’s  FieldPrinter eliminates one of the most common sources of conflict on construction projec
