Sensors: What’s Driving Growth and Who’s Who in Q1

Sensors are enabling the increasingly connected world. By allowing the collection of data, sensors open the door to more informed decisions by humans and more autonomous decisions by AI (artificial intelligence). Sensors also allow for remote insights, they enable realtime data flow, and they make predictive maintenance possible. Data has changed how just about everything in life and business work, and smart sensors are the devices behind the scenes, collecting this all-important data and sending it to wherever it needs to go to enable data-driven decisionmaking. According to a report from Precedence Research , the global market for sensors will surpass $508 billion by 2032, which is an increase from $204.80 billion in 2022 and represents a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 8.4% from 2023 to 2032. A large portion of the revenue share is in Asia Pacific, Precedence’s data suggests, with more than 40% wrapped up in that region. Image sensors for electronics and automobiles, MEMS (mi

A Plan for Safety and Infrastructure in Columbia

If you know me, then you know I have a passion for saving lives on our roadways and building strong, resilient infrastructure that can serve the needs of all citizens, which is why my interest was piqued when I heard about Bicyclist & Pedestrian Counts, which is part of a larger program, right here in my hometown of Columbia, S.C. To start, let me share with you a little bit of background about this program. The city of Columbia had an objective to study and plan for the movement of bicyclists and pedestrians as part of the Walk Bike Columbia Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan planning process. Starting in 2014, a comprehensive study of existing city programs and multimodal infrastructure, traffic safety data, and demographic data was conducted to develop the recommendations set forth in the plan. To gather this data, the Planning Division routinely conducts pedestrian and bicyclist counts throughout Columbia, with the help of staff and volunteers. This ultimately helps drive de

A Strategy for Safety

We all have heard many of the statistics such as this one: 4,764 workers died on the job in 2020. The good news is worker deaths in America are down—on average, from about 38 worker deaths a day in 1970 to 13 a day in 2020—and worker injuries and illnesses are down from 10.9 incidents per 100 workers in 1972 to 2.7 per 100 in 2020. Still, 4,764 deaths are too many. This is why many companies are turning to technology to create a safer construction jobsite. Consider the example of Brivo , a smart-building tech provider, which has partnered with Sanico USA , a facilities management services company in New York. Together, the two companies will provide a security solution to make jobsites safer and more secure. The system includes access control, biometrics, advanced analytics, AI (artificial intelligence), and remote management. Naturally, this type of technology creates a more secure construction jobsite by preventing equipment theft, which cuts down on financial losses, but it also

Gen Alpha and What Comes Next for Construction

I have been touting that we need to reach Millennials and Gen Z if we want a vibrant workforce in construction right now. Those who are already in the workforce can help fill in the gaps we are missing. As I have said, we need to show them what is possible and inspire them to do something innovative with technology. If we do, the rewards will be big for all involved—the individual workers and the company. That is the urgent need facing our workforce today—but we also need to be prepared for what is coming next. What is coming next is Gen Alpha, who are individuals currently aged 0-9 years old. A recent report, A Brand’s Guide to Gen Alpha, from Morning Consult surveyed 2,000 of their parents, asking them questions about their children’s screen time, brand preferences and purchasing influence, financial future, healthy habits, and travel plans. Here is what it found. Parents say these children are better off than previous generations in every aspect except one—mental health. This mea

Success Stories: RFID Smart Mold

Quality is perhaps one of the top tenants for many manufacturing companies. Now, new technologies are enabling manufacturers to deliver higher quality products to their customers. As one example, FineLine Technologies announced it has been granted a new patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. U.S. Patent No. 11,453,186 focuses on mold management, a critical process for the tire and rubber manufacturing industry. The solution uses embedded RFID (radio frequency identification) tags of critical mold components for automatic checks of the container, segments, and sidewall plates assigned hierarchal relations, checking the sequence of segments within the container, and providing a searchable, identifiable, and status-assigned mold register that automatically stores mold location, production status, and maintenance records. Here is how this can help in manufacturing: Proper mold management is key to quality of tire, accounting for roughly 35% of the tire’s quality. R

South Carolina: An Automotive Hub

South Carolina is becoming an automotive state and manufacturing hub, bringing jobs for the next generation. As someone who has written about the importance of American-made manufacturing, it is so encouraging to see many companies bring production back to the United States, and I am particularly excited to see it happening here in what is now my own home state. I am not typically one to hand out accolades in the political world (this is not about politics), but in this case I can say I am proud of the efforts of Governor Henry McMaster and his mission to build a strong manufacturing base. In fact, Governor, I would personally like to shake your hand and thank you for being so forward-thinking for manufacturing. For those of you who might not recall, I wrote the book Mending Manufacturing , How America Can Manufacture Its Survival back in 2004. If we want manufacturing to survive here in the states, we need a diverse approach to problem solving. It’s about thinking differently with em

Light Weight Concrete

Image
Concrete is a heavy building material. Or not. When concrete is filled with air, like a balloon, it can be light weight. The AAC (autoclaved aerated concrete) is made with fine aggregates, cement, and an expansion agent that causes the fresh mixture to rise like bread dough. In fact, this type of concrete contains 80% air, according to the PCA Portland Cement Assn. ) In the factory where it is made, the material is molded and cut into precisely dimensioned units. Cured blocks or panels of AAC are joined with thin bed mortar and components can be used for walls, floors, or roofs. The lightweight material offers excellent sound and thermal insulation, and like all cement-based materials, is strong and fire resistant. AAC does require some type of applied finish, such as a polymer-modified stucco, natural or manufactured stone, or siding to maintain its durability. Key advantages include: Autoclaved aerated concrete combines insulation and structural capability in one material for wall

Report Offers Roadmap to Regulatory Framework for Ethical AI

Technology for technology’s sake isn’t the best strategy for enterprise, and that’s always been the case. Technology for improved efficiency, improved quality, improved customer service, an improved bottomline, a reduced carbon footprint, a reduced time to market, and/or a reduced time to ROI (return on investment), however, is a good strategy. AI (artificial intelligence) holds incredible promise for transforming the future of work and the future of industries. However, it can be used recklessly. A new report from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce urges the industry to create a regulatory framework to steer the growth and use of responsible, ethical AI. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Artificial Intelligence Commission on Competitiveness, Inclusion, and Innovation is a year in the making, according to Chamber President and CEO Suzanne P. Clark. It was worth the wait. Clark says the report offers policy recommendations and industry best practices for AI that “provide policymakers and bus

The State of Homebuilding

We all know the challenges the homebuilding industry faces—supply-chain delays, labor shortages, high inflation, and rising interest rates, just to name a few. Now, the question remains: How are these challenges actually impacting homebuilding? A new report points to some interesting trends. The Assn. of Professional Builders recently shared its 2023 trend forecast for custom builders and remodelers. Here is what it discovered. Builders reported 2022 as a record year for revenue and most importantly, their net profits were up. Many builders also reported signing contracts at record margins during the last quarter of 2022 even as the market softened. One key statistic of note is that 58% of builders still delivered homes on time and are operating in the black. I think it is important to note that means this did not happen for 42% of builders. As we all know, Peggy Smedley has been on her own journey with the Living Lab and has experienced several delays associated with the process.

Is Automated Driving More Sustainable?

Opportunities for sustainability exist everywhere—in our homes, in our communities, and even in our modes of transportation. Today, let’s examine if automated services—including automated vehicle technology used in cars, transit, and automated parking—could lead to greater sustainability for all. But before you drive away, keep an open mind. A February article from npj Urban Sustainability digs into this topic. As the primary source of road traffic pollution, vehicle emissions degrade air quality and endanger human health. The ICCT (Intl. Council on Clean Transportation ) estimated global carbon dioxide emissions related to transportation will increase significantly in the future, growing more than 70% by 2050. Let’s consider how automated transit systems might help for a minute. This technology could use on-demand, dynamically routed data to determine routes, which could also reduce the amount of time in transit, and thus the amount of emissions emitted from a vehicle. As we know,

Success Stories: 5G Smart City

In the future, cities will be smarter than they are today—and they will be more connected. With the rise of 5G, the cloud, AI (artificial intelligence), AR (augmented reality), VR (virtual reality), robotics, and IoT (Internet of Things) services, anything is possible, and we are beginning to see that come to fruition in cities. As one example, National Landing is located at the center of the D.C. region and is made up of three neighborhoods: Crystal City, Pentagon City, and Potomac Yard. National Landing is home to the Pentagon, Boeing’s global headquarters, Virginia Tech’s Innovation Campus, and Amazon’s second global headquarters. Owner and developer JBG SMITH is working with Fortress Solutions to create a 5G smart city at National Landing. Here is how this city is becoming connected. Fortress Solutions will provide design and implementation services as well as operate and maintain the edge data center facilities for JBG SMITH. It will also maintain a ubiquitous fiber optic

Bentley Makes a Power Grab

Image
A classic move in business is to flesh out a company’s portfolio of options with M&A (merger and acquisition) activity. This is especially true in the technology arena and almost demanded in the software subset. As an enterprise-level software company grows, it usually starts to see gaps in its offerings and smaller companies filling those gaps, often with both solid products and great success. Bentley Systems is no stranger to the M&A world. Its product lineup represents a good cross-section of how that can benefit the company and its customers. For example, in 2022, Bentley acquired ADINA R&D, a leading developer of finite element analysis software applications used in a diverse range of engineering fields, and eagle.io to complement the IoT (Internet of Things) technologies that Bentley previously acquired, including sensemetrics and Vista Data Vision, and Power Line Systems, a developer of software for the design of overhead electric power transmission lines and their

The Digital Imperative in Manufacturing

The manufacturing industry is ripe for innovation, as it continues to embrace the IoT (Internet of Things) and AI (artificial intelligence). In fact, McKinsey suggests 50% of organizations’ revenue will come from new business models and products by 2026. And the way some manufacturing companies are talking this just might happen. What’s more, this is exactly the conversation I was having recently with Melissa Durbin, sales director, digital and application innovation, Microsoft , as we discussed digital platforms for manufacturers. She explains in just the last six months the company has been having more conversations with chief innovation and chief digital officers who are engaged and who are looking to make that move. “The time is now,” she says. “It is the digital imperative that if they do not digitize these products they will be left behind.” Does this sound familiar? We have been talking about this for more than a decade. But the good news here is manufacturers in all industr

Innovative MWC Tech Works Smarter Not Harder

The 2023 MWC (formerly Mobile World Congress) event wrapped up last week in Barcelona, Spain. With new product announcements, exciting demos, and even a big company rebrand, the event was fun to follow. Since companies big and small save many of their most important announcements for these trade shows, events like MWC tend to provide a good look at what’s trending in the tech space and where it’s headed in the coming years. Besides snazzy device concepts like rolling screens on smartphones and laptops, overall trends at MWC this year included a lot of talk about the metaverse and alternate realities. For instance, there was significant buzz about the SK Telecom’s air taxi VR (virtual reality) demo. Another popular AR attraction was actually a product—the XRAI Glass AR (augmented reality) glasses , which leverage technologies like ChatGPT to convert audio into visuals, essentially offering wearers the ability to see life with subtitles completely in realtime. Imagine the possibiliti

An Honest Discussion about Women at Work

Tomorrow is International Women’s Day, so we can expect an onslaught of content about the importance of women’s equality—and it is important to talk about how we move toward a gender equal world, particularly in industries like construction that have historically been male-dominated. But I think right now the most important thing we can do is be honest. There are real hurdles that still stand in our way to #EmbraceEquity, as this year’s campaign suggests we should do. Let’s name three of these barriers right now. For one, women still carry the bulk of the workload at home. Research shows more than a quarter of women spend more than 10 hours a week doing unpaid indoor housework compared to just 8% of men. This makes leaning into work more challenging. Building on that, women often make less than men, making those families with two income earners more likely to choose the husband to work, because, well, he often makes more than her. Let’s take a closer look at those numbers. In 2021:

Success Stories: Innovation in HVAC

Heating and cooling a home is certainly expensive. In fact, it costs a lot of money—and uses a lot of energy. The U.S. Energy Information Admin., says more than half of all home energy in the United States is used for heating and cooling. The good news is innovation is coming for HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) if you look inside what is happening at one university. At Purdue University , researchers have developed a scalable, automatable process that improves upon the traditional method to incorporate PCMs (phase change materials) into construction materials. The incorporation of PCMs like paraffin, esters, and salt hydrates into building envelope elements moderates the effect of outside temperature changes on the indoor environment. Here is how this can help: Convert changes in thermal energy into phase changes by transitioning from a solid into a liquid, or the opposite. Provide useful cooling or heating by absorbing or releasing energy during transitions. R

Addressing the Widening Talent gap in the Construction Workforce

Image
There’s a tangible talent and skilled labor gap in the construction industry. And it’s only getting wider. According to an Associated Builders and Contractors press release from early February, the construction industry will need to attract an estimated 546,000 additional workers. That’s in addition to the normal pace of hiring in 2023 to meet the demand for labor. Deloitte’s 2023 engineering and construction industry outlook sheds light on why job openings in construction remain high; it’s a combination of declining interest in the industry, an aging population, and talent pressures from industries such as technology and trucking. Another number that jumps out to me is that women only make up 10% of the construction workforce in the U.S. Yet, 2.65 million women are unemployed at the time of writing this article. And underemployment is a whole other topic.   So, are talent and skills gaps in the construction industry temporary or the new normal? I think only time will tell, but c
